The role of auxiliary conversation in the development of linguistic and cultural competences in bilingual programs in Primary Education

Descripción: | Programmes of bilingual education are becoming prevalent in Spanish primary schools, this implying the incorporation of language assistants into teaching. The objectives of this article are: (1) To explore the role played by these lan-guage assistants in primary schools in the Region of Murcia, Spain). (2) To an-alyse the coordination between teachers and language assistants. (3) To ex-plore their appraisals of such a contribution to linguistic communication and the cultural competence of students. In the light of the data obtained, our re-sults suggest the relevance of language assistants in the mentioned pro-grammes, this implying that these need improvements having two major axes: a) the language assistant, his/her role, and his/her training; b) his/her work con-text, with special emphasis on coordination and recognition of teachers. |
