Descripción:Using Costa Rica’s public educational context as a reference, this article analyzes the relationship between students’ affective reactions and the learning of a foreign language as English. To meet this goal, both cognitive and humanistic trends are overviewed. Besides, the article examines proposals regarding learning, academic performance, and the learning of a foreign languages. This study includes brief historical background information on the topic of self-esteem. Other related terms are defined. The duality ‘language acquisition’ and ‘language learning’ is also analyzed from the Costa Rican educational system. This study also encourages further analysis and discussion of this controversial topic.
