その他の書誌記述:A recurrent question in teacher education is whether educators who lack personal reading habits can effectively promote reading and model it in Early Childhood and Primary Education classrooms. University programs in these fields look to develop a comprehensive professional profile in which reading competence is an essential part. However, recent years have shown a decline in students’ interest in reading, a trend that affects both their training and the educational experiences they will later ease with children. In response to this situation, the purpose of this study is to analyze the reading habits of students enrolled in language and language didactics courses in the Early Childhood and Primary Education programs at the University of Costa Rica, Western Campus. A mixed‑methods approach was implemented with a purposive sample of 38 students during the first semester of 2024. Data were collected through a questionnaire composed of open‑ and closed‑ended questions aimed at exploring reading frequency, motivations, and the resources students use to engage with reading. Findings write down that reading is primarily driven by academic demands rather than by personal enjoyment or intrinsic motivation. This highlights the need to strengthen reading as a regular, meaningful, and formative practice within teacher preparation, encouraging experiences that foster critical, autonomous, and sustained engagement with texts. Keywords: reading, reading habit, teacher training, early childhood education, primary education.
