Descripción: | Procambium and phloem differentiation in the developing leaf of Acnistus arborescens takes place continuosly and acropetally, while xylem differentiation is initially spotty. These elements mature first in the median third of the midrib, then in secondary veins and gradually in the minor ranks, to form a reticulate lamina. Leaf growth curves obtained in San Pedro de Montes de Oca (1200 m) and Cartago (1500 m) show a typical sigmoid form with major increase in size taking place during the middle period; this period is shorter and slower at the higher altitude, probably in relation to the cooler temperature prevailing there. |
