Descripción:This article starts from an investigation regarding the relevant factors that support why the independence of the Isthmus of Panama from Spain occurred in 1821. Therefore, for this study it is relevant to analyze in the first instance the function of the isthmus in the Hispanic empire, in the background we will study in detail the process of imperial decline and the European reordering of the early nineteenth century. Later, in a third part, reflect on the relationship between the era of global revolutions and the American independence movements, to place ourselves in the proper historical context. In the fourth part we will make a conceptual delimitation of the elites and their characteristics, to understand their role in the isthmus and the region. Finally we end with a review of recent historiography on Central America and Panama and our final reflections.
