| Descrizione: | This qualitative descriptive case study explored informatics professionals’ perceptions of instructional effectiveness in an English for Occupational Purposes (EOP) course designed according to a prior needs analysis. Three Costa Rican informatics professionals participated in a ten-week virtual course focused on technical communication, workplace tasks, and field-specific English. Data were collected through participant observations, instructor memos, reflective journals, and a critical incident task; all data sources were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed positive perceptions of learner-centered strategies, authentic materials, role-plays, case studies, and collaborative tasks, which enhanced communication development, technical vocabulary, and soft skills. Instructional challenges were found to be linked to speaking anxiety, mixed proficiency levels, and the increasing demand for English in the informatics field. The study highlights the value of specifically designing EOP instruction for improving professional communication as well as meeting occupational language needs. |
