Promoting Biodiversity Education Through an Educational Guide on an Endemic Species: The Magellanic Woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus)

Environmental education in Chile has been integrated into formal education through initiatives such as the 2019 curricular innovation, where curricular contextualization allows for the inclusion of instructional guides. In the Maule Region, a project was proposed to develop a biodiversity guide centered on the Magellanic woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus); this species is endemic to Chile and Argentina, faces conservation challenges, and is considered an "umbrella species." Objective. To evaluate changes in students' biodiversity knowledge resulting from the use of an instructional guide focused on the Magellanic woodpecker. Methodology. A quasi-experimental quantitative study was conducted involving an instructional intervention. Pre- and post-tests were used to assess the guide's impact on the learning processes of students from three classes—spanning the third year of secondary education—at two regional schools: one with an academic/humanities-science (CH) curriculum and the other with a technical-vocational (TP) curriculum. Learning outcomes were characterized using a brief conceptualization exercise (the "one-minute paper" method), and a quantitative analysis of the textual data was performed using R. Results. The school with the academic (CH) curriculum showed a higher frequency of concepts at both stages of the intervention compared to the classes from the technical-vocational (TP) school. However, differing trends were observed between the two classes within the technical-vocational school. Conclusion. The use of the instructional guide leads to changes in students' knowledge, demonstrating its value as a tool that contributes to learning about environmental topics. |
