Descripción:This paper describes the use of digital social networks for communication, socialization and collaboration as part of an ongoing investigation whose purpose is to analyze the use that university students make of portable digital devices (PDD) –Laptop, tablet and smartphone. To collect the data, a questionnaire was designed under the project “Digital divide between students and professors of the Universidad Veracruzana: Cultural Capital; school trajectories and academic performance; and degree of technological appropriation”. The sample included 329 students of the open education system at the Universidad Veracruzana. It stresses that SMS text messages begin to be replaced by applications such as WhatsApp; social networks and email are frequently used to share and publish information; few are engaged in creation and collaboration with regularity and Facebook is the most used social network to communicate with teachers and peers. A certain relationship between gender and some of their activities in social networks, such as establishing relationships, using text messages and communicate with peers and teachers, was identified.
