Curricularization of University Extension at the National University (UNA), Costa Rica, 2020–2024

| Beschreibung: | Latin American public universities maintain the historical, theoretical, and philosophical foundations of university outreach, whose essence of social transformation allows it to serve as a mission, function, and substantive university process. Today, comprehensive education in universities cannot be conceived without the integration of teaching, research, and outreach, which promotes critical analytical skills through interaction with the socio-environmental and cultural problems afflicting their peoples and territories. While in other countries this integrationist approach to undergraduate and graduate education began in the first decade of this century, at the National University (UNA) it emerged with the institutional outreach policy approved in 2020. This qualitative article presents the experience of managing the curricularization of outreach promoted by the Vice-Rector’s Office for Outreach during 20202025. The results highlight the urgent need to incorporate a course into the curriculum, the provision of doctoral programs, and Community Student Internships as a mandatory requirement for graduation. In summary, the operationality and viability of this curricularization must be approached as a complex process within an institutionally adverse context. Therefore, a clearly defined strategic position is needed as a political stance in the short-, medium-, and longterm academic development of the UNA. |
