Descripción:Since long, educational institutions’ goals have included several efforts to stimulate their students’ involvement in reading, acknowledging its multiple benefits. However, although the education authorities’ discourse argues in favor of promoting an interest on reading and reading comprehension, students keep saying that they only read when they are instructed to or that they do not understand what they read. This essay intends to show that it is possible to increase students’ concern about reading and their reading comprehension in Mexico and other countries. The essay will also support an approach, based on a review of current pedagogical and literature theories, to promoting reading through a change in reading materials use and selection of strategies.
