Miêu tả:In Costa Rica, little is known about food security from a sociocultural perspective. This study, conducted in two semi-rural locations in the central western part of the country, documented agricultural product purchasing habits, perceptions of these foods, and the regional agricultural offering at farmers’ markets and supermarkets. The objective was to evaluate the relationships between these aspects and certain demographic and educational factors as a contribution to understanding the phenomenon. It was found that many people purchase agricultural products in supermarkets and farmers’ markets, even with the limitation of the distance to these locations. The ratings for product quality and variety were above average, but in general, older people and women gave lower ratings. An average percentage of the population reported having difficulty finding agricultural products considered nutritious or preferred by their families. The highest agricultural supply and market complexity were found at farmers’ markets, and the lowest ratings were associated with supermarkets in the popular commercial segment, where the majority of the population purchases their food. The regional vulnerabilities found are related to aspects of human development such as education and purchasing power.
