Descrição:La Mesa is known for its small-scale bok choy production, representing an agricultural system of local economic significance. However, due to its limited socioeconomic recognition within the national agricultural sector, it lacks institutional support. This study aimed to describe the production and commercialization dynamics of white mustard cultivation. A total of 592 data points were collected on-site (October 2023) through surveys conducted with 16 out of 20 producers (p = 1 – α = 0.90), focusing on socioeconomic, production, and marketing conditions. Approximately 87.5% of the farms are located on flat or gently undulating terrain, with a median size of half a hectare. Land is rented by 56% of the producers, and 50% engage in monoculture. All use certified seeds, agrochemicals, and poultry manure. External financing is not used by 93.8% of respondents, and 75% do not receive technical assistance. For 75% of the producers, this activity represents their sole source of income, and 68.8% rely on family labor. Weekly production (389 boxes) is sold at Merca-Panamá through intermediaries (93.8%). All producers consider the activity profitable, with a median weekly income of B/. 225.00. However, there is no coordination of production, no association among producers, and 87.5% are unaware of the final consumer price. The agricultural system shows a lack of institutional support and cooperative organization.
