The Role of School Playgrounds as Strategies for Educational Inclusion: A Systematic Review

Descripció:Introduction. Inclusive education, recognized as a human right, focuses on diversity and the participation of all students. Within this framework, school playgrounds play an essential role as spaces for learning and inclusion, spaces that can and should be transformed into sustainable environments in harmony with nature, spaces that favour the development of all students, especially those who are most vulnerable, such as students with Specific Educational Support Needs. Objective. This study conducts a systematic review to examine the scientific literature on inclusive playgrounds and identify the benefits of projects implemented to transform school environment and guarantee quality education for all. Method. The review was conducted using peer-reviewed scientific articles published between January 2010 to April 2023 in the main databases, focusing on key concepts such as educational inclusion, diversity, and inclusive playgrounds. Of the 583 articles identified, 20 met the inclusion criteria. Results. Inclusive playgrounds offer multiple benefits: they reduce conflicts and promote co-education and interactions between students with and without disabilities. In addition, they foster values such as coexistence, respect, non-discrimination, and tolerance. Conclusion. Programs and projects centered on school playgrounds constitute effective strategies for student inclusion, as they contribute to children’s comprehensive development, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals and promoting inclusive and quality education.
