Mixed Orchards in the Household Economy of Farms in the North Atlantic of Costa Rica

Deskribapena:This article presents the results of an investigation undertaken on five diversified farms located in the Costa Rican North-Atlantic zone, it includes the counties of Sarapiquí, Pococí and Guácimo. The article analyzes the mixed vegetable gardens located in those farms, and their role family economy. This cases where conducted under a commonly used epistemological historical- cultural approach. Each vegetable garden was analyzed with the farm it belongs to, considering particular characteristics and the way it is managed. Also, producers where interviewed about the benefits they get from vegetable gardens and their personal economic situation. Said vegetable gardens usually cover less than 10 % of the total farm area. Their products are used for self consumption and sold in the local farmers markets. This vegetable gardens are part of the diversification strategy of farms, which warrantees food security and helps to counteract the unstable prices of agricultural products in the market.
