The Role of Theoretical Research in the Building of Knowledge: An inquiry from Universidad Estatal a Distancia (UNED)

Description:Up to date, statistical and experimental research methods have predominated within UNED; theoretical methodology —analysis, synthesis, critique and conceptual reformulation— remains underdeveloped. This brings at least three potential consequences: the impoverishment of research projects, the underrepresentation of areas of knowledge that rely on discourse developments and the lack of multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches. Thus, we consider that the development of research at UNED requires a theoretical strengthening. This paper, then, examines the concept of theory and explores some of the characteristic functions and methods of theoretical research, in order to provide grounded criteria to promote academic reflection on their role in the construction of knowledge.
