Descripción:International maritime transport, as a fundamental axis of global trade, has experienced significant growth in recent decades. However, this sector faces a marked concentration of capacity, where a small group of operators dominates the majority of the cargo, challenging the traditional role of cargo consolidators as intermediaries. Therefore, this research examines the competitive strategies applied by shipping companies and how they influence cargo consolidators in Costa Rica between 2013 and 2023. Additionally, it explores consolidation trends in the shipping industry and their impact on freight forwarders. The theoretical framework focuses on competitiveness according to Michael Porter, as well as specific aspects of freight transportation. Regarding the methodological framework, a qualitative approach is employed through a case study, combining literature review, interviews, and questionnaires. The sources used are detailed, and the research's limitations are acknowledged. The first aspect under scrutiny involves the strategies employed by shipping companies to enhance their competitive edge, including the utilization of economies of scale, formation of alliances between shipping entities, and engaging in mergers and acquisitions. Emphasis is placed on the pivotal role of these strategies in navigating a challenging and dynamic market landscape. Subsequently, the vertical integration of the major shipping companies worldwide and their relationship with Costa Rican cargo consolidators is analyzed. Three key trends are identified: direct and indirect competition between shipping companies and consolidators, concentration of maritime transport supply, and cost control. Additionally, the implications of Porter's five forces on freight forwarders are analyzed. Finally, specific recommendations are offered to improve the transportation services of freight forwarders in Costa Rica, such as digital transformation, personalized customer service, logistics optimization, strategic alliances, and specialization in market niches.
