| Descripción: | This study assesses the welfare of working equines in Chirripó National Park, Costa Rica, and quantifies their economic contribution to the community. A specific welfare assessment tool was used, considering aspects such as body condition, hydration, health, and human-animal interaction. Results indicate a generally good state of welfare among the equines, although issues such as hoof overgrowth and some injuries were identified. Through surveys of horse handlers and data analysis, it was determined that equines generate significant income for community families. The study concludes that animal welfare is closely linked to the economic sustainability of families and underscores the importance of implementing welfare programs to ensure the health and performance of these animals. |
