Descripción: | To describe some traits of neosporosis in Costa Rica dogs, a cross sectional study was carried out to determine the presence/absence of N.caninum antibodies. Eigthy nine dogs from dairy farms, 65 kennel dogs and 94 from veterinary clinics from urban, periurban and rural areas in the central Valley región were sampled. The percentages of seropositivity were corrected by tha characteristics of the cELISA used as diagnostic test. A total of 60 samples resulted positivie, but after the correction the amount changed to 57. According to the provenance, the percentages of seropositivity of the sampled dogs were 13.6%, 23.3% and 29.9% from urban, periurban and rural areas, respectively. Besides, 12.3%, 22.3% and 31.5% of sampled dogs from kennels, veterinary clinics and farms, respectively, tested positive. Dogs from rural areas, from farms, over 9 months ald and those in contact with bovines had higher possibilities of testing seropositive. This study proves that neosporosis is a highly prevalent infection in dogs from urban, peri urban and rural areas of Costa Rica. |
